The SPAN list, where John Culleton of Wexford Press, JC Simonds of Beagle Bay and I volunteer as listmoms is intended to help small and self-publishers survive. I’m glad to see that you think it’s helpful.

(NB: none of the listmoms has a professional relationship with any of the others — we’re friends, of course, but the association goes no further than that.)

As for finding a niche, I think of it more as writing for your readers. Figure out who your ideal reader is. What he/she does besides reading your book, and why he/she would want to read your book. Then write more of that, or find a way to improve your delivery of it. While you’re doing this last draft, weave in “hooks” on which to hang your publicity efforts.

Your niche will take care of itself, when you’re writing for a particular audience, and when you know where that audience can be found.

Or so it seems to me.

Port Nowhere is a collection of short stories set in a shared universe, and asteroid named Port Nowhere. The people on Port Nowhere live underground in spiraling tunnels that lead deep into the crust of the asteroid. The further into the crust, the more anarchy and disorder rule. I wrote about 20% of the stories, and I hope to have excerpts up on the site soon.

Yep. It’s so rare to find a man of his word that folks get all bent out of shape when they meet one. I did get James’s gift, and I have decided that it is to my benefit to be one of his interns. I need a focus and I know he will give me that too….in spades!

It is amazing, isn’t it? I was looking at a famous internet marketer’s new blog because I was researching successful Internet marketers and for some unknown reason decided to read the comments on his blog post, and read your comment.
